This page covers everything our products keep on your device, and why.

None of it asks your permission, and that is deliberate rather than an oversight. All of it is there to run the thing you asked for. The law wants consent for storage that follows you around or that the product could work without, and we have neither, so there is nothing here to agree to and no banner to dismiss.

If we ever add something that does need your permission, you will be asked before it is stored, and saying no will still leave you with a working product.

What we keep

• Keeping you signed in

  When you sign in, we store something on your device that tells us the next request is yours. It is what lets you move between our products without signing in again at each one.

  Why it does not ask you: It is the sign-in itself. There is no version of a signed-in product that works without it, so there is nothing here you could reasonably be asked to agree to.

• Finishing a sign-in you started

  If you follow a link to a page that needs you signed in, we hold on to where you were heading, along with something that lets us check the sign-in that comes back is the one you began. You land on the page you asked for, and somebody else cannot finish signing in as you.

  Why it does not ask you: It is part of signing in, and it goes once you arrive. Without it a sign-in could not be completed safely, so there is nothing here to agree to separately.

• Remembering how you left a page

  Some pages let you collapse a section or set the page up the way you like it. We keep that on your device so it is still that way when you come back.

  Why it does not ask you: It is a choice you made yourself, it stays on your device, and it says nothing about you beyond how you like a page arranged.

What we do not keep

Nothing that identifies you for analytics. We count page visits in a way that stores nothing on your device and cannot tell one visitor from another. We can see a page was read. We cannot see who read it.

No advertising or tracking of any kind. No ad network, no pixel, no tag manager, nothing sitting there watching what you do. We do not follow you to other sites and nobody follows you here.

Nothing at all on this site. The pages you are reading now have no accounts and no database, and they keep nothing on your device.

Clearing it

Your browser can clear cookies and site data whenever you want, and you can stop a site storing anything at all. Doing either signs you out of our products, because the thing keeping you signed in is the thing you just cleared.

Keeping this page true

Every item this page describes is written down in code next to the products that set it, and a test signs in for real and fails if anything appears that is not accounted for. That is how the page stays accurate instead of quietly becoming the thing nobody remembered to update.

Anything new that gets stored on your device has to be classified and described here in the same change that adds it. Nothing reaches our products undocumented.
